“If you are making fun of your own race, it’s not racism.”

Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism towards a race or the belief that people of a race possess characteristics or qualities specific to said race that make them more or less superior to a person of another. Even if you are making fun of your own race when you make an offhand joke or comment, you are still targeting a race, regardless of whether it’s yours or not. If I made a comment about how black men always end up in jail, I would not only be using a stereotype, but I would also be exercising prejudice. I have never met a black man who has ended up in jail, therefore I would have an opinion on a matter I have no experience with. Even though I myself am black, I would still be targeting my race. People tend to group races into “types” of that race, so even if you belong to a race, you could target certain groups or types of people within said race.

Even if you yourself are comfortable with making fun of your own race, there will always be others that aren’t. Not only are you making fun of a people, but you are making fun of numerous cultures and beliefs within your race. You would be perpetuating the endless cycle of racism in the world. It’s bad enough that people from other races are showing prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism towards your race, but you are too.
